Since the earliest days of publishing, it has been well understood that the arrangement and composition of words — especially when arranged in the bound form of printed matter — make worlds. Societies have transformed in innumerable ways since the appearance of printed books, but perhaps none have been so tremendous and perilous as the ecological transformations that now imperil civilization as such. In this workshop, renowned theorist of the book-as-exhibition Dr. Anna-Sophie Springer and her collaborators will consider the long durée of the printed word in its portable format, connecting histories of the “book of nature” to the origins of the environmental and climate crises, while also exploring ways of making and transforming relations and futures through the cultures of print. By examining how publishing worlds have transformed our understanding of language, vision and nature, through this three-day intensive workshop (including talks, discussions, and site visits), participants will gain a unique insight into the environmental histories of contemporary publishing with a view to developing their own diverse and transformative paginated ecologies.

SHORT BIOGRAPHIES

ANNA-SOPHIE SPRINGER co-founded and directs the publishing atelier K. Verlag in Berlin. Through a versatile research-led and collaborative practice, she interrogates forms of cultural retention and creates interventions, which aim to contribute to the strengthening of a more vibrant, feminist, and ecologically-responsible world. In addition to her work with K., together with her partner Etienne Turpin she initiated and organized the international exhibition-led research project Reassembling the Natural (2013−23) as well as edited the intercalations: paginated exhibition series (2015−23). She is the author of Inter Folia Aves (trans. Blanca Gago, greylock editorial, 2024) and co-editor of the two-part publication project Robert Zhao Renhui: Seeing Forest accompanying this year’s Singapore Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia. She received her PhD from the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths, University of London and is currently Verwaltungsprofessur in Transformation Design at the Institute for Design Research, Academy of Visual Arts, Braunschweig, Germany.

KATHARINA TAUER is a typographer and graphic designer specializing in printed matter. She received her B.A. from Burg Giebichenstein, Halle/Saale and her M.A. from ECAL Lausanne. For the last ten years, she (and her partner Wolfgang Hückel) has collaborated with Anna-Sophie Springer on numerous K. Verlag publications, including the six-volume intercalations: paginated exhibition and the Processing Process series. A mother of two young children, she currently lives with her partner in le Midi, France.

VIDA RUCLI is an architect, curator, and editor based in the village of Topolò, Italy. She studied architecture and graduated with a thesis on partisan monuments of Socialist Yugoslavia and their relation with landscape and, in 2014, she co-founded Robida Collective, also based in Topolò. As one of the founding editors of Robida magazine, she approaches publishing by tending to the neglected multispecies landscapes surrounding her village. This entwinement of theory of practice is expanded in her numerous projects curating the public program of the collective, which, among other elements, includes running a radio station.
